According to a Forbes report published on July 20, 2024, UK artificial intelligence startups secured 22 percent of all venture capital investment in the year's first half. The total investment was $2.1 billion out of a global $9.4 billion. Dealroom and HSBC Innovation Banking data highlight a strong year for AI investments.

Simon Bumfrey, Head of Technology and Life Sciences at HSBC Innovation Banking, observed the recovery in investment activity during the first and second quarters of 2024. “In the first quarter, we felt we had bounced off the bottom,” Bumfrey said. “In the second quarter, the bounce continued and there does seem to be forward momentum.”

AI investments span various sectors, including therapeutics, energy, law, and finance. Notable deals include Wayve's $1.1 billion round. Bumfrey emphasized that AI is a tool across industries rather than a distinct sector.

The UK's Labour government plans to legislate AI development to align with global standards like the EU’s AI Act. This regulation aims to balance innovation and safety, a stance supported by investors like OpenOcean.
