Artificial intelligence (AI) was a key topic in the Digital Dialogue program held in Vietnam, supported by ABC International Development and the Australian Embassy. According to an article on in ABC published yesterday 40 journalists from across Vietnam gathered in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to discuss AI’s role in journalism.

The sessions concluded that while AI can be a professional asset when used ethically, it can pose significant threats if misused. Alex, a science communicator in Hanoi, noted, “They shared valuable AI principles, which, I have to say, many newspapers (including us) are lacking.” Bich Thuy Truong, a television reporter based in Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized, “Digital transformation is not simply important; it is a ‘must-do’ for journalism.”

Both dialogue sessions featured hands-on activities, including the use of “digital party packs” equipped with mobile journalism tools. Participants produced digital content during a field trip, highlighting the potential of AI and digital tools in modern journalism.

Jo Elsom from ABC International Development stated, “The group agreed that if media trust is critical to organizations and audiences, humans are needed” for ensuring accuracy and context. Discussions also highlighted the necessity of integrating technology with people to maintain media trust.
