Carbon Offsetting Needs a Rethink

Charles Cadieu, cofounder and CEO of Spiritus, highlights the flaws in traditional carbon offsetting on LinkedIn. He notes that while offsetting, especially through forestry, played a key role two decades ago, it now reveals major issues. Measuring carbon impact and managing forest fire risks remain challenging.

Cadieu backs the call from 80 nonprofits for a shift from traditional carbon offsets. He suggests focusing on carbon removal, which he labels as “additional, durable and measurable.”

He says, “Carbon removal is additional, durable, and measurable. Regulatory efforts should move towards carbon removal as a solution.” This viewpoint aligns with Spiritus’s mission to develop effective carbon removal solutions.
