Microsoft and Apple Exit OpenAI Board

Microsoft, which invested $13 billion in OpenAI, held an observer role on the board. Apple received a similar position recently. Both tech giants have now stepped back.
According to Financial Times, Microsoft informed OpenAI, "Under the last eight months, we have seen significant progress from the newly formed board and are confident in the company's direction." Microsoft’s withdrawal is considered to have prompted Apple to do the same.
Amid rising antitrust concerns over tech firms, Microsoft introduces ChatGPT into Windows and Copilot. Bloomberg highlights a US investigation into Microsoft’s dominance in AI.

On Tuesday, Microsoft announced its immediate departure from its observer role on OpenAI’s board. The resignation follows improvements in OpenAI’s governance after last year’s leadership turmoil.
Microsoft stated in a letter: “We appreciate the support shown by OpenAI leadership and the OpenAI board as we made this decision.” Both European Union and British competition watchdogs are examining Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI to ensure compliance with antitrust rules.
The resignation comes after CEO Sam Altman was briefly ousted and reinstated, leading to a reshuffle of board members. Microsoft views improved governance at OpenAI as making their observer role unnecessary.
